ADDIE Framework - series of steps so show analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate

ADDIE

ADDIE is a series of five phases instructional designers use to solve problems with learning experiences. Because the article “What is Addie? Your Complete Guide to the Addie Model” (Learning 2022) uses the term phases, I draw similarities to phases of the moon. Similar to the way the moon gains light on its surface with passage of time, enlightenment about the problem and how to solve it with learning experiences becomes increasingly more illuminated, until feedback sends us back to repeat the cycle in search of enlightenment once again.

Artifacts:

  • Table: View the ADDIE phases along with sample questions and applications the instructional designer addresses at each phase.

  • Podcast: Listen as I discuss how IDs the world round use ADDIE to chunk the process of solving problems into 5 phases. (Duration:6 min.) Podcast transcript.

  • Image: See how my classmate, Andrew Dykstra "AJ" borrows from the concept of climbing a set of steps as the ID completes the ADDIE Framework.

Analyze: Understanding more about the problem the ID is to solve?

We must begin at the beginning by investigating the Who, What, Where, and How’s of the environment. Analysis helps determine what the problem is and what needs to be done to solve it.

We use investigative research and documentation methods to construct an understanding of the needs, the learners, context and the tasks (Ritzhaupt and Covello) associated with performing the desired function.

Read sample actions an ID team will use to perform Analysis.

Design: What will the learning look like?

Design the Blueprint: This is a planning phase of the process. Imagine answering the question what will the learning look and feel like?

Design Artifacts

Some samples designers will identify to perform Design

  • Learning Goals

  • Learning Outcomes/Objectives

  • Instructional Strategies

  • Communication Strategy

  • more from Ritzhaupt and Covello

Development: Build the experience

Creators develop the content and experiences that learners will engage with. This is a building phase of the process. Creators will make choices around tools and systems, produce content and produce assessment

Development Artifacts

Some samples of activities performed during Development:

  • Content authoring

  • Presentation recording

  • Setting up access to online materials

  • more from Ritzhaupt and Covello

Implementation: Roll out the experience

Thinking through all the details assembled so far, implementation methods can be critical to ensuring success. Consider timing, context, grouping of individuals, and the performance of the instructor to support the experience.

Implementation Artifacts

Some sample of activities performed during Implementation:

Evaluation: Measure did it work?

Evaluation phase assesses the program. Was the instruction effective? If not, what are areas for improvement? What returns did sponsors experience from the program?

Evaluation Artifacts

Some sample of activities performed during Evaluation:

  • Formative Evaluation - testing in small group, and field trial to observe results, make adjustments

  • Summative Evaluation - summarize the results of a training program after it has run several times.
